Quite possibly, Tony. Try kicking it over with the spark plug removed. The noise may be a squeak from the primary drive or timing gears/ magneto/dynamo areas.

However if you mean the engine whistles when it's stopped it may be because it doesn't know the words, or that it's afraid of the dark.

Hello Tony

In my experience if the head gasket has gone your going to know it!
It would normally be a loud and messy affair.
May be try and use a length of tube as a stethoscope to pin point the sound.

Its hard to diagnose with out hearing it, but could it be a poor fitting exhaust, or tight valves squeaking or air intake through the carbs or a manifold leak all possible causes for whistles

Try and pin point it and then is should be more obvious for the cause

A blown head gasket has a loud phut-phut noise. You can't mistake it, almost like a blown exhaust.

I would say more like, phew-phew, but I guess it depends a bit on the ear of the behearer. But in general Tony, I would say you are about right!

It is a one cylinder heavyweight ?

If so, I recomment a check of the oil support of the inlet valve. Maybe the valve (screw on the left hand side of the cylinder head) is choked.

Trying to describe the sound of a head gasket on the way is a pointless exercise, the sound depends on how far the gasket has gone. If you only have a low 'whiffle' tightening the head bolts IMMEDIATELY may effect a cure.

On the left side of the cylider head Michael?
