Rear brake light

Post by G3L1946 »

Morning all,

Can anyone post a picture or diagram of how the bracket and Lucas 22B rear brake light switch is fitted? On a 1955 G3 LS.
Thanks in anticipation,

Steve

Hi

This is a 61 but I think the principle is the same:

I do find, the spring needs to hang downwards on the brake rod. The spring and switch position adjusted so the spring pulls level with the brake rod.
If it pulls out of alignment on the rod or side ways it can stick on.

Hi Mick & Rob,

Thank you, yes set up seems the same. The bracket obviously locates into the slot running around the spacer. I noticed that, on the brake activation rod, there is a circular permanent disc. This is probably to prevent the spring attachment from sliding?

Steve

The circular disc on the rod is nothing to do with the stop light spring. The disc is at the rear of the rear of the rod. ( Disc, rod spring. brake adjuster & brake arm.)
On Mikes bike year & model picture you will see, it has the brake adjuster etc. at the front end of the rod.

Hi Rob,

Thanks, that seems quite obvious now I’ve reviewed it. Looking at my photo, am I missing a spring between the brake activating arm and the stop? It never had one? Not sure why stop is there as appears redundant.
Regards,

Steve

Update, looks like I’m missing a spring! Just double checked manual.

Without the spring there is a possibility that the adjuster will rotate due to vibration. The spring holds the dimple on it against the cut away in the bracket. Leave it out if you want but as it is specified by the manufacturer an insurance investigator may jump on it as an excuse not to pay in the event if a claim.

Hi Clive,

For the princely sum of £1.50 it not worth leaving it off!

Thanks,

Hmm, it seems that my brake rod is round the wrong way, with the clevis on the brake arm and the adjuster on the brake lever. It's worked fine since I've had the bike so I'm in no rush to change it, but does it matter?
