I'm told I handle a bike better than a computer... I sure hope so! Better luck this time.

Try

Perhaps 50mph is too quick for me after all

Signed up. Gordon and his team have gone a bit barmy I think. Still, nice plan and should increase revenue from speeders significantly. Probably provide the income for the loans made to all those greedy chums of Gordon and his bonkers crew that really screwed up and put us where we are now.
Or am I just being cynical?

If I've understood things correctly, the proposal is to reduce that element of the National Speed Limit which relates to single carriageway roads. You will still be able to do up to 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. I seldom agree with this government but I think this proposal is perfectly reasonable and the petition is misleading.
Old gits like me will recall the fuel shortage of 30-40 years ago when a voluntary blanket limit of 50 was introduced to save fuel. Most folk kept to it - I was doing a lot of travelling around the country at that time and it didn't seem to take me any longer getting to places and the fuel saving was quite noticeable. Personally, I wouldn't object to a blanket 50 limit, motorways and all. It probably wouldn't work with today's traffic volumes and the number of patience-lacking hotheads around but would certainly make the world a lot quieter, and we could once again venture out onto motorways and trunk roads on our old plodders.

Not a bad thought Richard but don't you just get a little p...ssed off with this nanny state, ala school lunch box contents.

Hmmm Richard. I think you need to be doing a couple of thousand a month to appreciate what lopping 20mph of the speed limit on a motorway will do to your working times. I'll end up driving half asleep. Because I'll have to.

I understood it to be 'country roads'. How that would be defined would be debatable.
There are many A roads that are single lane and restricting them to 50 would grid lock. On the other hand some more narrow roads should be 50, why anyone on bike or car wants to speed when you cannot see beyond the next bend or hill is beyond me.
As for motorways I think it should increase to 80. Police figures in the paper this week said that only 29 out of 30,000 ish accidents in 2007 related to speeding.
( I think I got that right)

Most accidents I see on motorways are the result of tailgating.
