1960 Matchless G9 - Ammeter
I am about to order a replacement ammeter for my 1960 G9.
There are two listed +/- 12amp or +/- 8amp.
Which one was originally fitted? The price is the same so I might as well get the right one.

Don't really know the answer to this one, but the theoretical current delivered by the 60 watt dynamo is 10A, so on that basis it ought to be 12-0-12. Now you will obviously say you have an alternator, but the spares list gives the same ammeter across the range of singles and twins, cooking models or competition.

Can you raise your log book query on a separate query? Only this could get confusing!
Alan - Thanks for your thoughts, that makes sense. I'll order a 12-0-12, unless someone convinces me otherwise. I presume the 08-0-08 ammeters were for earlier pre 1960 models?

What the hell is a qurey?
Shufty, I have established that the Lucas part No. was CZU27, equating to the AMC no. 36084, but no where do the blighters say whether it is 12-0-12 or 8-0-8Edited by - Biscuit on 03 Jul 2007 6:02:05 PM

The view of that ammeter in the Lucas Spares list of 1956 indicates that it had just two divisions either side and a - sign on the left and a + one on the right. (I have seen this model on some bikes). I have an 8-0-8 on my 57 G9, I have a good battery and a recon dynamo and rarely get a full scale deflection. On an extended run with all lights on, it settles down to a very slight charge - difficult to judge precisely, as when switched off the needle is not quite central, but at about a couple of needle widths to the charge side!
If I had a 12-0-12 meter presumably I would get very little reading apart from after start up for a short while. I am not saying that is good or bad, but a thought to bear in mind. But if you intend fitting modern Halogen bulbs then I believe it would make sense to fit the 12-0-12 meter irrespective of what is specifed for the 1960 model.

Well I've ordered a 12-0-12 on the strength of this.
Thanks for the help.
When its finally roadworthy - I just don't want to hear from some know-it-all saying "nice bike - shame you've got the wrong ammeter....."

"A lot of people think that. What only the real experts know is that AMC fitted the 12amp one to the first 100 home models made in........"
