Protective finish for freshly blasted tinware

Post by Andy51 »

Hi All, I have just had a tin chaincase blast cleaned, awaiting the attention of a panel beater as has been distorted by someone tightening up the 7/16 nut and also holed the shock absorber dome. I have been advised to give it a coat of primer to prevent rust, but will that cause a problem for the painter later? I thought about WD40, but was told this would get in to the shock absorber dome/main chaincase seam and damage the paint finish. Any thoughts?

Depends what paint he will use. I'd ask him to suggest a compatible primer.

I'm very curious to see what kind of paint he would suggest.

I don't think rust will be a problem. Wait until the panel beater is finished and treat the case with rust neutraliser before etch prime, under coat, and top coat.

I have just had a frame blasted but cannot get it painted for a month or so. I was going to etch prime it but the painter told me to leave it bare metal for him. I mentioned i was concerned about rust but he said to just keep it somewhere dry and it will be fine.

I always use an etching primer. Its compatible with almost all primers and paints
