N1 magneto points
The points assembly on the magneto I have just fitted does not have one.
What does it do?

Not sure. Except perhaps keeping the points from going out of line . However in the installed points I think you have the small points spring upside down. It's counterintuitive but I think it goes the other way up. The witness mark shows this.

Funnily enough you just beat me to it Clive, the small sprung steel spring is fitted the wrong way round. The first time I ran across this decades ago I had to question it as well. I managed to find another set and found the spring the same with the small spring tang fitting outwards.

Ohhhh...
It was fitted the other way up. It seemed to me more like a washer that way up than a backing spring... So I turned it over.
