Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the fuel tanks from India. I have been looking for one for my 46 500 for ages but can't find one anywhere in the world. I have heard from guys here in Australia saying that the mudguards don't fit the best but nothing about the tanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got mine from India. The mounting holes were M8 but can't complain for the price

I have two competition style tanks from India.

One is steel, it came a bit rusty inside and needed a good clean out and the front mounting pillars are not exactly perpendicular to the base of the tank, otherwise good.

The other is polished alloy and very good.

I have read bad reports about them, but what the proportion of good ones to bad ones is... I don't know. I do imagine people are more inclined to post up complaints than compliments.

My mate purchased one for his BSA Gold Star Chrome looked good and generally looked to be good value UNTIL he started using it , it split at various places.
He took it to a specialist who told him it was a waste of time trying to repair it as it was made of metal that was too thin and the vibration from his bike would continue to damage it if it was repaired.
He ended up selling that at a auto jumble and getting http://www.holtworks.co.uk to make him a new one.

I have a set of mudguards and a petrol tank from India on my G3. They needed a little fettling but generally fitted well. The metal used for the mudguards was 'substantial', probably thicker than the original AMC ones. The petrol tank fitted the frame mountings and had the correct threads in the four mounting points. The badge fixing threads were metric so I used metric screws. Easier than trying the change the thread. They've been on the bike since 2017 and there have been no problems of any sort.

I guess there's going to be variation across Indian makers..I bought a bare tank for a 63 twin. Apart from retapping the fuel cock threads, and a little elongating frame hole, it fitted fine, never had any leak issues.

Bsa tanks with a fixing in the centre of the tank had a reputation of splitting anyway. Having said that I bought an Indian tank ( arrived within a week FROM India) and although it is for my Arial ( same centre fixing as BSA ) it has had no problems. However, it was rusty inside and painted inside with red oxide. The fit was ok. You pays your money and etc. etc. How much does it cost to have a tank made in the UK?

One of my chums received one from India but the threaded inserts for the tank badges weren't blind so petrol would've leaked out.
When he complained they sent him a correct one and (not surprisingly) didn't want the previous tank back.

Thanks for all the advise guys, It does sound like it's hit and miss, I will just keep looking for an original one for a bit longer. If someone has one they are willing to part with and send to Australia let me know.
