1954 G80S Speedometer Drive.

Post by OEW591 »

I'm not familiar with the single-sided rear hub as fitted to the 1954 G80S. A fellow Fenrunner has an issue with his speedometer drive. The dogs on the speedo drive are unworn but the slots on the wheel are worn. Are these slots part of the half-width hub itself or are they present in a removable ring as for the 1955=62 full width hubs?

If they are part of the hub itself, is it possible to cut new slots at 90 degrees to the originals to remove the wear?

Thanks

Single sided hub the slots are part of the actual hub. Usually the wear is caused by a previous drive locking up due to wear and the hub being chewed up (on the full width hub it can be a cause of the rear wheel lock up as the bearing adjuster is driven in).
To answer your question there is no reason why new cuts at 90 degrees to the others will not work. Thinking about the long term use of the hub you might want to try 60 degrees so allowing a second recut some time in the future.

Thanks Clive. If it needs doing in another 69 years, I don't think I'll be here to worry about it!!
