Machine screw type on choke lever

Post by BrianDowning »

On my 1961 AJS Model 8 I would like to replace the two screws that clamp the choke lever to the handlebar so that I can raise the choke slightly.

Question:
Are these Whitworth Machine Screws or BA or some other type? The outside measurement of the shaft of the screw is .18 inches or 4.8mm

Explanation, if you're bored....
These screws are on the underside of the clamp and are not visible in the attached photo. The photo only illustrates what I'm trying to fix. Right now the choke lever catches on the throttle as it is rotated and the attached brake lever is at an angle due to the curve in the handlebars. I did move the throttle out slightly, and it helped slightly, but not enough.

Regards, Brian

Someone did start a list of bolts and sizes, I think it's on the Dutch archive site.

For a bit of fun, how many threads per inch are they?

They are possibly BSC or BA. But I maybe mistaken.

Oh, that was mean... :)

30, I think, my eyes aren't that focused, even with bright light and a magnifying glass!

Hi Brian, the top part with the lever assembly is normally the top part of the lever clamp, I can't see how changing the screws will raise it?

Placing a curved shim above the bar and below the choke, just need slightly longer screws.

And you can't simply move the whole thing slightly further inboard on the bar to clear the throttle? It's only used briefly during starting so does it really need to be precisely positioned?

No, unfortunately it's attached to the brake lever.

Ah, one of them. How much gap do you need, could move the throttle a couple of smidges outboard?

If you have original levers the screws should be 1BA but some pattern types use M5. If the choke lever was originally a “stand alone” type i.e. it was fitted with its own clamp, these tend to sit lower on the bar than those that were part of the true combined lever. There are also different sizes of throttle clamps too.

Maybe I have the wrong end of the stick but can you not dismantle the unit and put the lever in a vice and tweek it with a very slight upward bend ?
