Girder Forks dismantling

Hi Everyone
I'm rebuilding a 1929 M6 and am currently at the 'take everything apart and see what needs doing' phase.
I've never worked on girder forks before and am a bit cautious about any stored energy that may be in the spring when I release it.
Is this something to be concerned about If so, what is the technique for releasing the spring gradually
Cheers
Tim
