Clive , there are only two types of AMC clutch on our bikes

yours if definitely this type

If you check the parts list for 1958 , it lists 5 plain plates and 4 friction plates for everything except G3LS that has one less of each
so you are right that it should have the extra plain plate against the spring carrier

The Norton site is incorrect as is only lists 4 of each

General rule is the end of the spring adjuster flush with the stud , you can of course test it before putting cover on and adjust accordingly . I have found some friction plates are thicker than original and therefore would adjust the tension

Thanks Peter, just been over the garage and can confirm that the clutch basket is bonded both sides, in the dim light yesterday I thought it was plain. It is the type sold by Andover Norton, my other G11CS has the basket with the inserts. I feel a club order coming on for new friction plates and springs.
