Hi has anyone had any experience with the clutch slipping when kicking it over to start? And how to remedy the problem?

Common problem on many bikes, remedied either by increasing the tension on the springs that bear on the pressure plate (as long as the clutch plates can slide properly on their tangs and splines and the cable isn't jamming) or by adjusting the operating pushrod to eliminate negative float that prevents the pressure plate from seating properly against the stack of clutch plates.Or both of course. Start with the latter maybe.
Here is a useful article on the transmission on lightweights, which shows the pressure plate and clutch clearly: https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/AJS-Matc ... haul/91777

Is it a very difficult job adjusting the clutch and push rod?

Adam it is well worth looking round the archives website as see what instruction books and owners manuals are available for your bike. Adjusting the clutch is a relatively simple job and the sort of thing you are going to need to be confident about tackling if you are going to give your bike some good use. Page 16 in this owners manual will tell you how to adjust the clutch.
