frame number

Hello,I have just joined and this is a simple question....Where will I find the frame number on my 1956 500 M18 ???I have removed the seat and tank and wipe cleaned the headstock top tube, oil tank area, in fact practically the whole frame and cannot find any numbers or letters, any suggestions ???

If the frame has been repainted you may need to rub back the paintwork to show it. Your 56 bike should have the number on the off side on the seat pillar but look at the frame examples as its possible your frame is later. Are you dating it from the engine number which may well have been changed in the intervening years?
