VN was a Yorkshire North Riding registration. I do not think a 1932 AJS would have been sold in a junk shop in 1932 unless it was wrecked.
Reg. no. VN 579 was issued during 1929. So it was a 1929 AJS

Re: AJS Bike Mystery
Let us not jump to conclusions. The post says the junk shop sale was 1950 which seems reasonable as it would simply be an old bike at that time. Reg documents and number plates were much less rigorously controlled when they were simply a green document held by owner. Lost documents could be replaced. Somehow my 1952 frame has ended up with documentation linking it to a 1948 issued number. In this case its possible a later engine was put in the frame before it went to the junk shop and it was dated by the new owner based on the model code on the engine number.Rob Harknett wrote:VN was a Yorkshire North Riding registration. Re: AJS Bike Mystery
Clive, the post did at first state brought 1932, note the post has been edited. This must have been done after my comment. 1932 then changed to 1950.clive wrote:Let us not jump to conclusions. Re: AJS Bike Mystery
For 1929 the AJS got the noticeable new shape petrol tank, new round tubing fork design, also the 1929 was the only year AJS had the Magenta petrol tank panel.
Note in the B&W sales cat pic the panels position behind the gear lever knob. This can be a little more clearly seen by sharpening the original photo a bit and raising the temperature.

That's nice Rob. I do not have the software to do that, is it very expensive. My cheap photo shop would be able to strengthen the coloursrobcurrie wrote:Here is an enhanced and colourised photo.
