Twin Oil Pump - to Wellseal or not Wellseal

Post by Duncan »

Just reassembling my oil pump and wanted to check if I should Wellseal between the pump body and front and back plates or just rely on the metal to metal joint, it's not clear in the manual.

Thanks
Duncan

I wellsealed mine but was very careful to use the bare minimum. It has been ok for 1700 miles so far.

I would not reccomend putting anything between the pump body and the front and back plates. One part of refurbishing a pump is to grind these plates to remove the wear created on the face of them by the gears during normal use. This helps to improve pump pressure and reduce leaks that cause wet sumping. The fit of plates to gears is intended to be very close and even Wellseal will create what is in effect is a large gap when you start to consider oil at high pressure.
