Having read every page I could find on the subject of 12v conversion by joining 2 of the 3 alternator wires together, I still can't find [or I missed it] which 2 you join. My Wipac has 3 wires exiting, a green, an orange and a white, but which 2 do I join together?

you join the Orange and Green together.
Make sure that you have suitable voltage control in place.
Don't forget battery, bulbs, coil and HORN need changing to 12 volt units.

thanks for the quick answer colin. 12v bulbs, horn etc are already in place. i was thinking of using a 12v rectifier from an old [say it quietly] suzuki gt125, which has 2 outside a/c terminals and a middle d/c terminal. any thoughts? would this obviate the need for a zener etc?

p.s. one last question: why do 2 a/c wires go straight to the light switch [loom with no resistance wire], from the alternator,same on ajs as gt125. just seems a bit weird to me. please answer in words of 2 syllables or less

Firstly rectifiers are not voltage sensitive so will not give you voltage control even if it is off a 12 volt bike!
You need either a zener set up or some form of powerbox.

The AC wires go to the light switch to switch coils into the circuit when the lights are switched on (on a 6 volt system) they do nothing on 12 volt system!
From memory they are the green and orange wires that you have connected together at the alternator!

My advice for what its worth is get a 12v reg from Paul Goff, its a rectifier and regulator combined, comes with instructions and the best thing it works.
Only downside its around £40 when the vat and p and p are added.

Why go to Paul Goff, support club members There is a better unit made by Boyer which gives emergency start and even running without a battery, it is however twice the price.

I'd recommend a Wassell unit , £25 inc delivery and VAT much cheaper and seeing most bike don't do lots of miles shoudl do everything you need

Ebay is full of them. I bought 2 for 20 bucks for a Sunbeam S7 alternator conversion.
