I decided to try a complete new kit of proper mounting parts from the spares scheme and, hey presto! ..... problem solved without resorting to butchery - 3 out of 4 now screw in perfectly and the 4th I can get to start on the thread by using a slightly thinner rubber.
The moral of the story ......
