Steady on Colin, he's bad enough to deal with as it is without boosting his ego further, but I'm glad he gave me the same guidance as I'm the first one of the week. The number and V5C came within 3-4 wks.cbranni wrote:All down to you Roy.

Re: My first Matchless is here!!
I've been checking my front brake shoes and wheel bearings today, I managed to get the shoes out and they seem pretty worn, 3mm of material left in places. Need replacing?
Does the lining get replaced as well as the shoes? I've tried to clean the surface rust off and it doesn't seem too bad now.
In order to get into the wheel bearings and remove the spindle, does this nut have to come off? I'm struggling to get a grip on the spindle and remove the nut.

No - 3mm is fine - clean them up and leave as is.markwhitelock wrote:3mm of material left in places. Need replacing?
No, clean it up and leave as is.markwhitelock wrote:Does the lining get replaced as well as the shoes?
Yes - but only if you want to take the spindle and bearings out, the alternative is to wash out the bearings with solvent and re-grease in situ - I'd give this a go first.markwhitelock wrote:does this nut have to come off?
The nut sets the position of the brake plate to the hub so it needs to move really - just grip the other end of the spindle in a vice and free it off with the aid of penetrating fluid.

Thanks Mick. I was struggling to get the vice tight enough, the nut was seized on so much that the spindle just started moving in the vice.

Re: My first Matchless is here!!
Made some more progress this evening with the help of Mark, ajsm18, who kindly popped round. Still struggling to remove the top cap on the forks though - I started a new thread to try and get some tips!
I'm also on the hunt for a dynamo gear if any one has one gathering dust in a draw!!
