I've been mulling this one over for a while now and I can't help but keep coming back to the fact the crank has been re-built just prior to identifying this issue.
Over 1/8" of end float on the crank is very large and to my knowledge unheard of, therefore I'd be confirming the crank dimensions and if they are good, looking for distortion to the cases.
As Steve hinted above, shimming the crank by 1/8" will put the oil pump gearing out of alignment and introduce wear.
