Your dictionary is correct, Paul, but here in the Southwestern part of the US, formerly part of Mexico, the meaning of patio has been extended to any outdoor, paved area.
For instance, my Southern California home has a covered tiled patio in front & an open tiled patio on the side. Good spot to watch the fires raging through the hills!
