Magneto question

Post by Shelby-Right »

Hi , can anyone tell me a source to buy some felt wick for the lubrication of the face cam , goes into the hole under the points assembly, I don't need a huge quantity. Cheers .

I got one for a K2F from Feked. Then lost it and made one from some fuzzy felt. Months later the original one turned up under a cupboard but the home made one is doing fine so its stayed in.

I think I might drill a hole between two bits of metal approx ? cut some felt sheet from the craft shop , give it a light coat of pva glue, and press it together till its dry .

All it needs is small twist of felt as a wick shoved up the hollow screw - a slivver of felt can be rammed in easily enough, leaving maybe 1/8th of an inch exposed to rub on the face cam. Even a tight-wrapped bit of rag, like a tiny bit of face flannel. Or, if the screw isn't the correct one with the hollow middle, drill it to take it. No need for glue or other ingenuity.
FWIW, many new (good quality, not the ill-fitting brass things from wherever) cb assemblies - such as some excellent new ones I have that came from Dave Lindsley when he was operating - don't have the wick. The screw isn't hollow and the threaded end doesn't sit flush with the lower part of the cb assembly when fully home: there's a small gap that could take a small round pastille in felt if required - but nothing was supplied.
A significant proportion of face cam mags and magdynamos actually don't have a wick fitted. A now-and-then smear of light grease will keep the square end of that points-opening pushrod lubricated sufficiently.

Hi , thanks for the good info , I've got a light smear of hi temp grease on it at the moment , the pva glue wasn't to glue it in, but to make a small round stiffened wick in a split piece of metal , I have not seen an original and didn't know if jamming in a soft wick would just come out . Cheers

find a hat maker and get some offcuts or just look on th e bay for sheets of 3mm felt .
not being funny but with all those sheep over there you wont have to go far to find some felt , maybe ask a local farmer or go to local craft fair .
i think some handbags are made of felt .
my old freind rachel in NZ was doing something with craft fairs and farmers markets and posted this page linked below which might give you a contact to finding some bits of felt to cut into strips .

Chiropody felt ? Semi compressed felt . It adhesive on one side but the adhesive side can be cleeved off easily.
