Anyway, as mentioned previously, the bolt was finally extracted, replaced by a stainless item and secured with a stainless cage nut. The original itself seems to have been a cage nut anyway, judging by the remains of what was left. I think the main issue was that the chain guard hadn't been removed since 1960 - so I have resolved to remove it slightly more frequently than that in future...
