Hello I'm new to the world of classic bikes, I've recently been given my grandads old AJS model 8 .
it starts and runs fine but when I turn the headlamp on it then discharges the battery and the bike dies like there's no power. it then wont start until I have charged the battery up again.
as far as I'm aware the bike is standard and is still on the 6v system and I'm keen to leave it that way.
any help would be very much apricated.
Thanks Paul
battery discharge

Re: battery discharge
most likely the rectifier that turns AC to DC has given up or the Alternator is not producing power
when it starts on 'I' without lights does the battery voltage increase (use voltmeter on battery) it should give > 6.3V
'E' is only for emergencies and gives more alternator output but should not be used for too long

Re: battery discharge
most people convert to 12 V with 74mm later stator and rotor + rectifier/rectifier box + bulbs
If you do that you disconnect the resistance wire that was originally used while lights are off
if your wiring is good you can still get a 6V rectifier unit , rotor etc.
