1957 AJS 16MC

Post by jimh »

I recently bought the above machine and am in the process of checking everything over before putting it back on the road, there is a picture of the machine in 'Roy Bacons' restoration book on pages 102/103.
The Exhaust pipe fitted is not right and has been 'butchered' to run under the correct competition footrest so the kickstart can clear it, looking at the photo in Bacons book it seems the pipe should run over the footrest and I am trying to identify the correct ex.pipe from Armours website to replace it.
Would any member with this model bike post some photos of where the pipe support stay bracket fits and also confirm whether the pipe does run over the footrest.
Thanks Jim

These are both armours exhausts...

The far one is the earlier type (if I remember correctly) of the over the footpeg pipe, it is more upswept.

Hi Joker,
The blue Ajay exhaust arrangement seems like what my bike should have, are those competition footrests with the pipe going over it?
The bike I have has the comp.pegs that sit on the end of the square bar across the frame not the earlier ones that straddle the bottom frame rail, the silencer fixing point is like yours just under the oil tank and slightly upswept, you say they are Armours pipes, do you recall what model pipe you ordered.

No... On the blue bike I replaced the comp pegs with standard road pegs, the pictures of the pegs on both bikes are in the thread I linked above.
If I remember correctly I did try fitting the exhaust with the comp pegs I had but it was just as much of a squeeze. Note the blue bike has a burman gearbox, there was a bit more room on the other bike with an AMC box and folding 15CS type pegs.
The fixing stud on the front pipe on both bikes needed an offset bracket made up bridge over to the frame fixing, note both duplex frames.

Joker_B - those machines are lovely.

On my G80S I had to fit a brackett, but it's scruffy! You attentionb to detail does you credit.

Thanks JB
The bike has the correct AMC box but it looks like I may have to change the Comp. pegs.

Armours web site says the 'correct comp pegs are needed' to fit the over the peg pipe.
I could never figure if that meant any type of comp peg was correct or that the correct type of comp peg was needed...
I guess you'll find out when you offer the pipe up. ๐Ÿคจ
