Post by Andymc312 »

Hi , after some advice, the speedometer gearbox keeps spinning round , I've checked and double checked, what can cause this.

Hello Andy,

Have you checked the assembly sequence of the rear axle components?
The attached diagram shows the relevant parts and the numbers in the picture are as follows:

1. Circlip 010740. 2. Oil seal cup 018094 3. Oil seal 014387. 4. Ring, large 018095. 5. Collar 012436. 6. Spacer for oil seals. 7. Outer race. 8. Spacer 021586. 9. Ring, small 021585. 10. Adjusting ring 021583. 11. Spacer for speedo g/box 021594. 12. Nut, locking speedo G/box. 13. Locking ring 021279. 14. Spacer 021591. ? Not part of the assembly, just holds the sectioned bits together.

When my speedo stopped working the newish drive had worn out after about 500 miles. The worm had worn away. I rebuilt and fitted an old one and that turned on the axle when the wheel was spun. I measured up and it needed a 2mm thick washer which I made and fitted inside unit. This has worked perfectly for about 5000 miles.

The speedo gearbox should be clamped between parts 11 & 12 on the above drawing, nut 12 should be the last one you do up when fitting or adjusting the rear wheel. Not shown on the section is washer 021454 that goes between nut 12 and the gearbox and prevents the softish metal of the gearbox being crushed. If the gearbox is damaged where it clamps or the shoulder on part 11 (and /or 12) is damaged it may not be possible to obtain a secure fix.

Sometimes it's easier to right click on the image and select "open image in a new tab" and zoom there?
