1948 G80 chrome parts

Post by Douglas Campbell »

Hi.
My G80 has the chrome and maroon painted tank. The oil tank, chain guard, and battery strap are also chrome plated. Would this be original?

Cheers

The tank could have been ordered specially or for an export model. The battery strap might've been chromed but not the chainguard or oil tank.
You can check here :https://www.jampot.com/archives.asp

PS just looked and it was chromed.

Thanks Dave. I know a chromed tank was an option, it was the oil tank and chain guard I was curious about

My 1954 has a chrome oil tank but it is a export model but I don't think it would be a factory fit anyway,
Fuel tank is black but primary chain case is chrome though again don't think it left the factory like that.

I've read in the Archives that in the U.K's near bankrupt post-war years many materials were 'rationed' and priority given to companies for their export orders in an attempt to obtain foreign funds.
Steel was one of those which is why the Land Rover was designed with an aluminium body - (or it's said to be the reason).
ISTR that wheel rims were argenised as chrome was in short supply.
I'm pretty sure that in those immediate post-war years oil tanks and chainguards weren't chromed at the factory unless maybe for the coveted export orders.
