If a bit of choke in third made the engine run better, it would suggest it was running lean when on main jet. Doesn't sound like it, so I'd try adjusting the retard lever while on a steady throttle in third. If it improves things then timing is out. Too much advance can give similar symptoms to running too lean.

No idea tbh, if so then that's where I'd look next..advance bob weights freely moving?
