Is this the original 1955 G9 tank? It has ridges in front of the knee pads others don’t seem to have? I am going to need to rebuild the seat so want to know if the tank is atandard or not

Afraid I cant really answer you question but the water deflector was certainly used on the G3WO and the 1952 Model 20, I feel yours is more like the latter but others will know better.

Thank you Duncan, if it was used on the Model 20 it may well be the original tank?

Not the orignal tank. It's a 4 gallon tank only fitted to early fifties AJS twins. The early G9 had a 3 gallon tank. Your '55 G9 would have had a chromed and panelled 3 3/4 gallon tank. But if its a good tank why not keep it, it looks good! It won't affect the seat fitting. ( If you did want to go mad there are some good looking chrome and panelled tanks on ebay from India.)

Thank you Dave for clearing that up, much appreciated; yes I have mulled the options over the last few weeks and pored over Indian tanks and there is even a rusty chrome and red original for sale in Australia but settled on keeping this one, as like you say it looks good and is sound. As the seat is no different I’ll give Leightons a call and save my pennies for a set of pipes and megaphone silencers. 👍 cheers

Hi All,

Which rubber Lucas battery box fits my bike please? It has the standard chrome bracket that is held by a bolt at the top and hinged at the base.

There seems to be more than one and I'm not at home just now to measure up.

B38-6 PU7D (looks like the one to me, green cardboard box, - hard rubber)
Approximate Dimensions :-
Length: 116mm (4-1/2")
Width: 88mm (3-1/2")
Height: 162mm (6-1/2")

PUZ5Dn (Small, comes in a red cardboard box, flexible rubber)
Approximate Dimensions :-
Length: 92mm (3-5/8")
Width: 92mm (3-5/8")
Height: 140mm (5-1/2")

It's the 4 1/2" one. There are better ones now on ebay which are 3 D printed and are rigid. Most of the others are very floppy rubber which need lining with aluminium or thin plywood sheet to stop them crushing in when the battery strap is tightened.

Reassembling the beast now I have a straight swinging arm from Ebay - it went on OK with a new spindle from the Club shop as the old one was badly pitted.
I have a question. I’m fitting new oil filters as I go and have just done the oil tank filter that was as bad as I’ve ever seen. I’m not familiar with the front filter but using the handbook from .dk have changed that too. The odd thong is that the relief valve arrangement does not resemble the handbook picture, or at least the bits are in a different order. Please see attached for comment, the photo shows the order the bits were in when I took it apart.
