Hi all,
Quick question regarding SAE 140 oil for rear fork hinge. Castrol produce both a 140 EP and a 140 D.
Which is the correct one please? One is cheaper than the other so maybe to do with additional additives that are not appropriate or necessary?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: SAE 140 oil, EP or D
Hi
140 D is a lower pressure gear oil than 140EP, (extreme pressure). The additives in EP are not beneficial to phosphor bronze so the best oil is 140 D
Though I wouldn't buy 140 D if I had some 140 EP if it was destined for the SA pivot
Regards Mick

Hi Mick,
I don’t have either in the garage so nothing will be wasted. Locating a monster syringe at the moment as this seems a good way of getting the stuff into such a difficult location!
The correct location for the entry screw is 9 O’clock I believe?
Thanks

the correct location is one which allows access and is not interferred with by the oil pipes!

Hi Clive,
When stripping the bike down the filler location was on the other side from the oil pipes! Does it have a bearing ( no pun intended ) which side it goes? Also, doesn’t the filler hole need locating in a position so that overflow indicates correct level or just not too critical?

Hi
The hole should be at three or nine o'clock, as Clive says, orientate it to suit access past the oil pipes. I've always assumed it acts as a level plug.

Hi Mick,
That was my assumption, 9 or 3 o’clock. Better replace it on the oil tank side and not where it had previously been placed.
Thanks to Clive and Mick, I think I’ve got the answer,

I don't think overfilling will be a problem somehow. It takes long enough to get anything in, even using the barrel from a hypodermic syringe (with the needle popped off).
