crankshaft shims ?

Post by chas »

upon stripping my 58 16ms ,i find that the timing side crankpin has had 3 shims fitted, 2 are still on the shaft, the third is in the bottom of crankcase in pieces.
could anybody advise me why these shims would be fitted?

thanks in advance

to adjust crankshaft end float? Maybe not needed after your renovation?

crankshaft shims ?

...just to add that you would normally adjust end float by moving the timing side bush inwards to eliminate excessive play. Judging from the fact that one of your shims had disintegrated this is also much safer...

tom
my reading on end float adjustment indicated the method you suggest, perhaps the missing shim particles are what has caused the drive side bearings to pick up!! [;)]

thank again
