Late model G80CS & G3C speedo

Post by mdt-son »

Hi
1964-on G80CS and G3C were equipped with speedo SSM 3002/00A (MPH) or SSM 3002/01A (KPH), ratio 2:1 . Speedo cable was DF 9110/00 (new for '64). The gearbox was new for '64 also, 030208 (BG 5330/1067), necessarily having a 2:1 ratio. From 1956 to 1963, speedo gearbox 024448 (BG 5330/267) was fitted (also with ratio 2:1). The new gearbox would still require a 7/8" hole as there are no new wheel parts for '64, so I guess the new gearbox has something to do with the cable attachment. I believe the new gearbox will be hard to find. Anyone know of another gearbox which can be modified to fit? Models with Norton wheels used BG 5330/257 (same ratio, same cable) which had a hole of 3/4" I believe. Has anyone tried to adapt it, or another version?

Thanks,
Knut

Hi Knut,
I had a Smih speedo gearbox n° BG 5330/168, ratio 15/12, not suitable with my fully reconditionned Magnetic speedo. The hub is 63 - on. So I bought from FEKED an English made replica, ratio 2/1, suitable for Domies, early Commandos, and heavyweight AMC post 63.But it was wider (25,1 mm) than the previous original one (23,5 mm) and it was rubbing slightly against the alloy plate. All the spacers seemed to be in good order : 1 spacer between inner bearing race and the speedo gearbox, the little spacer centralizing this gearbox (from Norvil) fitted on the outside, and finally, the large spacer, exactly as featured in supplementary user's manual for 1964. Finally, according the advice of one member, I shortened on a lathe the "centralizing spacer" and fited it at the Inside of the gear box. No problem since...

Great advice, Jean-Noel. I will try to obtain a genuine BG 5330/257.

Cheers, Knut
