Oil supply to rockers

Post by Andy G »

Quick question, hopefully just to reassure...

Having started putting miles on my 62' 31 csr I have just done the 50 mile head re-tourque and note that the inside of the rocker cover caps are dry. There's a little pool of oil on the heads at the base of the rockers and valve stem but I expected to see at least something inside the ali covers?
There's a clear oil trickle from the feed hole along the ridges on the back of the rockers.
Is this adequate or should I expect more "splash" around inside the caps?

Doesn't sound right. I'd start it up with the caps removed to satisfy yourself there's plenty of oil getting to the rockers.

On mine with the caps removed and engine running ( and warm oil ) you can clearly see the oil spitting off the rockers and onto frame and forks etc.

Ok, thanks, I'll test as suggested. Just to confirm tho, when you take caps off are they typically misted, or running with oil inside?

Assuming engine has been warmed before.

Thanks all.
Second torque of heads today, this time I took the caps off immediately after a ride and it's now clear that there's plenty oil getting to the rockers. I guess it had just had time to run down last time leaving the inside clean and seemingly dry.
Reassured!
Oh, and yes, I did indeed wait until cold before torquing heads and setting valve gaps.

Looking forward to gradually using more throttle until I can perform an ignition kill check from full to check plug colour.
