Thanks all for your wisdom, and comparative measurements!
I am told the step recess on the right (non brake) side of the frame is legacy design provided for models with a closer fitting exhaust which fouls the standard nut and washer..... not a problem for the 31/G12 so I can ignore that, and there's no need for any kind of sleeve/spacer on either side, so that's an easy fix too. So now the correct stud is on order, I'll refit to original, and then apply Mick's 'adjustment' if brake lever is fouling the chaincase.
Perhaps with heat tho just in case
