Thanks for the quick reply.
I think I'm probably expecting too much from the brakes (not that I ride modern bikes) but these put me off riding. I will try and find out where Villiers Service get their linings from and feed back if their is any noticeable improvement after truing and getting the linings turned to size. Maybe the lining that you have is from Saftek and it is their "Green Gripper"?

I have heard through the years that moulded linings work best on cast-iron friction surfaces, and woven linings work best on steel friction surfaces.
Check a Model A or Model T supplier such as Synder's in Ohio (he services both), and look at their linings... they still sell woven "Scandanavia lining", which has brass wire impregnated into the lining material ( I believe).

I guess it is brass wire in the linings I have, but I don't know if green gripper has this
