New to me AJS model 30

I just joined this group today after buying what seems to be a 1956 model 30 basket case. I am really a Norton guy…since 1973, but this came up and looks interesting. Comes with a Lucas K2FC magneto which I think is not originally fit.
It should get delivered to my home by the weekend. Mostly missing tinware and pretty crusty. Engine is frozen. I have done many British rebuilds over the last 40 years, so not new or timid on this one.

Welcome, even if it has taken 49 years for you to recognise your mistake. You are right the K2FC mag was fitted to the CS models which I do not think were introduced until later than 1956, however provided it works it would be fine on a road model, unless of course you are going for an "as it left the factory" restoration.

Would originally have had a K2F # 42230B or D, manual ignition advance, with alloy dome cb cover and steel press-to-stop button in the middle.
Loads of detail changes between K series models but they all do the same job, and id labels may or may not reflect what a thing atually is of course.
Any manual K2F or FC set to run anti-clockwise will be fine.
You'd be able to swap out the C version for a standard one and maybe get some change if you are looking for 'original'.

The seller dropped it off at my home yesterday. I did some brushing on the left crankcase and found the engine number verifying it is an early ‘56 model 30. 56/30 0272
Along with the K2FC magneto it has a 21” front wheel and top fork covers without headlight ears. As Clive said the “CS” version was not until model 31.
Today I put an old 410-19 K81 tire on the rear so that it will roll. It had a flat 400-19 K70 that was in really bad shape. The engine is stuck, but after pulling the plugs and looking down the hole…I’ve seen much worse.

Oh…as far as mistakes, the only one related to “made in England” machines was a ‘64 Norton Electra. I rectified that by putting it in a dumpster.

No I didn't! I simply said the CS was introduced later than 56, I have a Matchless 58 G11CS which would be the equivalent of an AJS 58 Model 30CS.

Thankyou for the brochure Clive. A previous owner has made some modification to my ‘56/30. It came to me with CS spec tire sizes…4.00-19 rear 3.00-21 front. The chrome on the rims is peeling, so I’m going to replace front and rear with WM2-19 and use 3.50-19 tires.

My G11CS has 400 by 18 rear tyres and 3.00 by 21 front. I have finally given up off roading so I have fitted road tyres. With an 18 inch rear tyre you get much better choice of tyres. The other advantage is that if you stick with the 4.00 format the seat height is the same as with a 3.50 19 wheel. As age catches up with you this can be an advantage if you are shorter like me.

What fender if any are you using with the 21” front?

Aluminium one. Total height of a 21 by 3.00 tyre is not much bigger that a 19 by 3.50 about 1/2 an inch closer to the mudguard.
