Thanks again all. Followed advice and a simple job. Bad news is con rod is twisted and now just an exhibit for the wall of infamy. I don't know what's gone wrong. Certainly wasn't thrashing the engine. Next step is to find a con rod and decide on re-grind of journal etc.

If the rod is twisted it sounds as if you came close to a total seizure. When I had a similar problem, you could hear the hammering of the rod on the crank which damaged the rod big end “eye”. You say there wasn’t much oil in the timing chest - I’d look for the cause of the problem before attempting a rebuild as there are several culprits to look out for.

No oïl in the timing chest isn't a problem, for me : oïl seeps quickly through the roller bearing, and there is none when opening the timing cover.
