Gear box oil seal

I have just finished the total rebuild of my 1957 Model 30 and have now done a just 60 miles and already it is on its second new kick start shaft oil seal. It has a new shaft and seal but even so it leaked from the off. I got another new seal a cut a narrow strip of 5 thou shim and put it in the grove before fitting the second new seal. This slowed the leak a bit but it did not cure it and still weeps all over the floor.
Does any one do a decent seal to stop this or do you all just live with the mess?

X ring also worked well for me.

Daft thought but if it's not the shaft / seal interface then is there any casing damage where the seal meets the casing?

It's a a while since I looked at this area.

Simply, replacing with the original type 'O' ring is a waste of time. The educated among us now use a lipped seal and they don't leak.

Thank you all for the replies and I do like the one re: the lip seal as that is what I am looking for. Firstly where can I get one and secondly does the casing , which is not damaged, need to be machined out?

I believe the o/s dia is 1" and there is no need to mess with the casing. I always get my seals from my local bearing supplier, but the club spares probably have them too.

Good morning 1608. I will give it a go but from memory the standard seal is flexible and has to be to get it in to its grove . The access is not an open hole. That it how I got the strip of shim. However, I will have a go as I do not want the mess and I don't want to run it with less oil and in my book it is broke so I will fix it. Thanks to one and all for you input and I will let you know how I get on.

If you buy the quadratic kickstart and gear spindle seals from either the Club or AMC Classic Spares they are quite easy to fit in the grooves. Make sure you replace the gear change spindle one as the original ones leak there as well.
