Intermediate Timing Gear circlip fixing

On my recently re-built engine (re-built by others I should add as I am a new owner), the oil pump backplate does not seat fully on to the three crankcase mounting studs because it fouls a circlip that is fitted on to the Intermediate timing gear (stub) shaft . Indeed it actually rocks on the circlip!

Neither the parts book nor the technical manual lists or even shows such a circlip although in my ignorance, I assume that one should be fitted in order to retain the gear on the shaft - or should it? There is actually a circlip-accomodating grove on the shaft (part No. 012508) even though the parts list drawing of the shaft does not show such a groove!

I would be grateful if anyone could throw some light on the correct fitting of this intermediate timing gear please?

No there is no circlip. The pump plate holds it in place. I've never noticed a groove in the spindle.

There should be no groove for a circlip.
