The wrong spindle for your swing arm is what you have there, forget the spacer etc it's bodged brake plate spacer. Your swing arm is for the eccentric snail cam spindle.

I think this is the bolt in question.........(I can't help as I've never had a bike with a QD wheel).

Is that in the inside side of the right hand of the swinging arm? With the exhaust below, and the speedo cable tucked behind, that's what it looks like. What year is the bike? I have only ever seen that arrangement for wheel alignment adjusters on the outside of the swinging arm, but you live and learn...

If it's the one in his first post it's a '55 18S. (Wasn't 1955 a one-off 'Interim' year?)
I can't see any adjusters in the pics of it here:

Re: Swing arm question. What is this?
That's a wheel alignment adjusting bolt. There will be a matching solid "lump" on the inside of the left hand fork. They are the abutments for the snail cam adjusters that should be on the spindle. Once wheel alignment has been achieved and that bolt locked in position with the locknut, the wheel will remain aligned whilst the chain can be adjusted using the snail cams. The photo shows some of the parts. It's what I started with when I built up a '54 G3/LS basket case.

Yes but he has a '55 18S, so as Rob said it's the wrong swinging arm.

Re: Swing arm question. What is this?
If you look at the photos in his original post “New member just bought a 1955 model 18” it would seem that he has 1955 wheels but a 1954 frame. So maybe he needs to source the earlier rear wheel and spindle along with the snail cam adjusters or change the swing-arm for the 1955 type, if indeed that’s possible.
The rear brake arm is also upside down.

The engine number is 27225 (55 18)
There is snail clam adjuster on the left side.

So, what am I missing?

Well at the least you are missing the snail cam on the right hand side instead of that spacer.
