Cylinder barrel base nut, access?

Find a flattish combination spanner slip it over the nut, then you could if needed put a. Bend in it to give you more movement, just a thought on this, one of the tricks for tight spots, boot sales for picking up cheap tools.

Not just an AMC problem. The access to the 12 point nuts at the base of my '71 Bonneville cylinder is a real problem. I've had to grind a lot of metal from around a 1/2" A/F ring spanner before I can get it over the nuts.

Looking at the picture I can see that there are thick washers under the nuts, these were never specified by the factory, the nuts were simply wound down onto the barrel. I know it doesn't seem good engineering practice but there must have been a reason for their omission. Secondly without them fitted it leaves a gap for a ring spanner to be slid between the barrel fin and the top of the nut.
