magneto gear removal

Post by Steve »

Hi guys
I've popped the engine out to strip and hopefully stop/reduce the oil leaks.
have the top end stripped (good job I did) removing the gudgeon pin and the top ring fell out in three parts.
but now to topic have taken the nuts off the magneto gears but am unable to remove them.
is there a tool / puller to remove them or is it just a case of using the mechanics favourite tool and just give it a whack.
hoping there is a tool.

also while I'm here valve springs removed using a big screwdriver just levered them off.
again is there a tool for putting them back on?

and how do i get the flat bit off the valve to remove them.

I'm sure ill have more questions at some point although this is supposed to be more of a winter job,

Hi Steve, you need to give us more info about the bike. Is it the 16MS as in your profile? If so what year is it? You need to read the manual for your bike. Look here for it: http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Owners_manuals
Cheers Dave.

More information here: http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Workshop ... dition.pdf
For anything else ask here on the forum eg the tyre pressures in the manual are way out of date. E.g. modern tyre compounds are much softer and need more pressure. Most use 26 front and 28 rear or even 28front,30 rear.

You need to do more homework!

If you go to 'parent directory' from the link you've been given by Dave, and grab the FW Neill book you'll find more.

See pic of tool on page 40, Fig 9. See also pp in chapter on the electrical system.

A suitable generic puller would do the job easily too.

Thanks guys engine striped now had an old 2 leg puller that I ground the ends so they would fit.
and also had an old bull joint separator that I also ground down to fit to remove the small gear from the end of the crank.
by hell that cranks bloody heavy.
so now its just a case of cleaning and lots of polishing, should keep me busy

to remove the small gear from the end of the crank.
You probably don't want to know this but unless it's damaged and has to be replaced there's no need to remove the pinion in order to separate the c/case halves as it will pass through the timing side bush.
The pinions also have a tendency to crack when removed with a puller.

When you've done the homework that Groily set you ;) ............have a look at the excellent article in the link below ref stripping, checking and rebuilding the H/W engine. Written by noted expert and ex-AMC club member Ken Bryant (aka 'ITMA').
(I'll be asking questions later  ).

Ha ha yeah that information would have been handy, Oh well its off now and on a separate issue I think the spline's on the other side looked pretty worn. is that something easy to replace or will I need to find a specialist?

and thanks for the download, the more information I can get the better.
