Chasing some assistance with 1941 G3L
Hi guys
I got some issues with my front wheel axle and brake. The bike is being restored and came as a basket case. I have assembled the front wheel axle and brake and have two issues as I see it.
One, the wheel is off the right side by about 10mm in the forks
Two, the lock nut on the outside of the brake plate seems too wide and is not leaving enough threads for the end nut and I believe is also contributing to the wheel being off centre.
Any advice on how to rectify this?
Kind regards
Al

Have you got the correct locating nut inside the brake plate? Can the brake plate go further into the drum? I can't find any pictures of the locknut but for info there's a front wheel for sale on ebay and it does look to have the same locknut. The ebay number is 265720505767. He has a number of G3L bits for sale at crazy prices.

Re: Chasing some assistance with 1941 G3L
when i had my 46 G80L wheels rebuilt by an expert , or so they said the offset was wrong , and I had to rebuild to center correctly in the forks
mine has the smaller brake plate with a bolt anchored to the fork leg, is yours the same if so this will confirm correct wheel spacing
yours looks OK , just the wheel offset is wrong. the axle thread is pretty short in the nut
Is your fork leg correct ?

Dave.
The correct nut (flat sided) is there and screwed out to set the plate distance so it does not scrape the brake drum.
Yes that is crazy price for a front wheel.

I am assuming the fork legs are correct, they look like the ones in the parts manual. I am starting to suspect the wheel offset unfortunately.g80csp11 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 3:02 pm when i had my 46 G80L wheels rebuilt by an expert , or so they said the offset was wrong , and I had to rebuild to center correctly in the forks

Yes, it appears I am out. I am now pretty confident the wheel needs re-lacing.
Mine is one inch

Re: Chasing some assistance with 1941 G3L
By the way I am reading the 1941 Maintenance Manual and Instruction Book. Page 59 Para 83 TO ASSEMBLE A WHEEL BEARING (FRONT OR REAR)
I noted this further down the page.
"NOTE :—In the case of the front brake cover plate it is most important this is correctly positioned.
It is retained to the front wheel spindle by an inside nut (Part Number 40-G12M-H47), and an outside nut (Part Number 40-G12M-H46).
Between the inside nut and the brake cover plate is a locating washer (Part Number 40-G12M-B100.)
The inside nut should be positioned so that, when the locating washer is placed next to it, the outside face of the washer is 1/16th inch proud of the outer edge of the brake drum. (Tested by placing a straight edge across the edge of the brake drum.)"
I know for sure that I do not have this "locating washer" and a google search cannot locate what it looks like, AMC spare and AMOC do not list the part number. (Part Number 40-G12M-B100) New part number is 017334.
Does anyone have a picture of one of these? Does anyone know where I might source one of these?

Re: Chasing some assistance with 1941 G3L
my measurement is from the flange closer to the wheel centre ( check the picture i put up ), but clearly shows yours is incorrect
I dont have this washer and use the thin nut to adjust the brake plate off the drum , its only to stop it touching the drum
sounds like you are sorted now , good luck

Thanks for that, Just for clarity you are saying the measurement of 1/2 inch was taken from edge of rim to the outermost edge of the brake drum flange, rather than, as I did, across the highest point of the inner ring of the flange?g80csp11 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 2:22 pm my measurement is from the flange closer to the wheel centre ( check the picture i put up ), but clearly shows yours is incorrect

I have sourced the correct size of the locating nut (40-G12M-B100, 017334), which I did not have, and also a local motorcycle shop that does wheel lacing and can adjust my wheel offset.
Now all I am chasing is the front brake lever arm old part number 40-12M-B65, new part number 017327.
