Don't worry about being "left behind" in a group ride out as trying to catch up can easily lead to trouble be it mechanical or worse. Join the "50mph club" and enjoy the ride, many of us do just that.

By the way, if you are near the back you will have to ride faster than those in front, whatever bike you are on - strange but true.

Cheers rew and I’ve been ok so far and I’m probably just thinking also if I can drop the revs a bit at say 50 might be a good thing but don’t want to cause issues for pulling away etc. and I know what you mean about speed at the back from my sports bike ride outs 🤦???🤣

Cheers

The sprockets on my 350 "special" chose themselves, they are the ones I had so I used them.
This thread got me thinking... What overall ratio do I have?
If my maths is correct...
19 42 19 42 = 4.9
If 3rd in the gearbox is about 1.2
then 4.9 x 1.2 = 5.9
So I have a three speed box with overdrive?

The standard gearbox sprocket it 16 Teeth. I think you'd be well overgeared with a 19. A 650 CSR only has a 17.

How does it ride with those sprocket ratios?
I don't really know yet...
I have only had a couple of shakedown runs.
The first ended prematurely with a when a misfire developed after about a mile, at this point I thought it was better to be heading towards home rather than away from it and conked right out as I pulled up outside with a totally sooted up plug.
The second run was spent swapping out the taper jet and needle position to stop the plug fouling and checking to see if anything had come undone or fallen off. How the gearing felt didn't appear on my radar :)
I will report back when I have been out for a less distracting ride.

Yes... I had a look at the gear ratio chart. the only comparable overall ratios were for some 650s and 750s.

And... I have a 4" tyre on the the back, on an 18" rim though... Hmmm.

400 18 tyre, unless it is modern lower profile, will be the same number of turns per mile as the more usually fitted 350 by 19 on our road machines so should not interfere with your ratio assessments much.

Yes... its a 4" Avon SM, so as you say, you would imagine a 4" on an 18" would be similar to a 3.5" on a 19".

I found a little chart in Bacon which gives the comparisons without having to get the calculator out :)

So the latest finding is Had another VMCC run today and this time was 2 up with my daughter, we did quite a few hills in this run and I think I’ve come to the conclusion I am probably going to leave the ratios as they are as I did have to change down to 2nd on a couple of the hills so if I was to change the gears to try get a higher top end I might have to push it up the hills 🤣
