Fuel spat out of the carb onto the oil tank suggests to me the inlet cam may be one tooth out. What with different dots for 500 and 350 plus the fact that on a 46 engine you are using what on a later engine is the exhaust cam as the inlet cam, if the cams have been updated for later ones in can complicate matters. I used to run my 48 matchless 350 bitsa with the inlet cam one tooth different from the markings to stop the spitting. Sorry cannot remember now which way I changed it as I now have an AJS engine as it makes life so much easier working on the Dynamo.

HI Clive / Spriddler - Just to say thanks for your help with this. finally got around to playing today. I think the culprit was a damaged needle - I put a new one in today and it now runs a dream! Also fitted a Thorspark (naughty I know) but really runs well, and starts way better.
