1963 AJS "interm" Model 16 Front Spindle

Post by KerryAJS »

First post, so be gentle :-)

Just starting a restoration of the above mentioned model and will need some guidance, please.

First off is the front wheel and brakes, just looking for a schematic, verbal or pictorial, of the sequence of build up of the spindle. I seem to have a few extra washers/spacers that I need to position correctly ?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome, Dan.
For starters, have a look at the website, known as 'Christians Archive' in the link below for manuals and more.
Manuals are under the 'Books' section.
(As you probably know, the AJS and Matchless machines are the same apart from cosmetics so you can refer to the manuals for either marque).

Thanks Spriddler

I have trawled most, if not all, of the literature in the archives, but no drawings/photo's of the detail I'm after.

F. Neill's book gives a good specific mention of fitting wheel bearings to the specific model, but no drawings or details of washers or spacers.

Hmm, well in that case I can't help as my experience doesn't extend beyond the mid 50's so I haven't a clue about the parts of a '63 front wheel.
Someone will know I expect.

Thanks for that g80csp11

I guess they didn't want to photograph the spindle and nuts/washers like the rear one of the interm model..

you can check the P11 parts list that shows all the part numbers , not G15 as that has norton hubs

Thanks again g80csp11

I had to google P11, I'm very new to all this!

I wonder if the P11 has the same brake plate, if that's the correct term, as the interm 16, as my plate has a few faults?

I believe its all the same , whats the issue with yours ?
They have a wider brake shoe fitted than the standard hub
Roy Bellett had one on his auto jumble stall , the plate that wraps around the drum edge only on the interim hub
