The shape is unimportant, anything would do, even a stack of washers! I've always made the spacer inside the chaincase from hexagonal bar and tapped 7/16 x 26 (although some are just ordinary spacers). The other is a good size spacer say 3/4" dia with the 7/16" clearance hole.

So it’s just a spacer between the engine plate and the chain case and then it tightens via a nut inside the chain case that is also a spacer to the outer chain case.

Here are some pics of what I’ve done, should add to my original post but can’t find it ??? Still a bit of work to do but I think I’ve managed to fit a Norton box to a matchless with an ajs engine
