Petrol tank mounting

Post by G3L1946 »

Hi,
Just trying to clarify what mountings are necessary for the petrol tank ( 1955 G3LS ). What came off doesn’t correspond to the manual! See photo, the ones with the raised centre came off the front mounting lugs the others from the rear ( they look homemade). Can the fronts be reused?
Excluding bolts, washers and sleeves I think it’s four of 014995 ( thick pad ) and four 014996 ( thin pad ). I’ve seen, elsewhere, only seven pads required? Just wondered why thick and thin are necessary? Do they go in a particular order?

Thanks, as always,

Steve

Those are right for front and back from underside. Above are two sleeved bobbins that the mounting bolt go through. There's also a plain washer to stop the bolt going through the thin rubber. All available very reasonably from our beloved spares department.

Actually, looking at yours, the thin ones should be plain not raised. The metal sleeves go through the thicker bobbin and protrude into the mounting hole.

Thick on the top thin on the bottom with the penny washer, use the sleeve and correct length bolt to prevent making a hole in the bottom of the tank and add lock wire to taste.

The early bikes/singles used a tab bolt to secure the tank and omitted the thin rubber over the carb corner for clearance.

Hi,

So it would be correct for four of each, and forget old ones? From bottom up..washer, thin pad, frame lug, thick pad and bolt passing through into tank.

Thanks,

Steve

Just in case, Steve didn't mention the sleeves in his list. Don't leave them out. Belt and braces, I personally use a dab of Loctite as well as wiring the bolts.

Hi, Yes, I have the full list of parts taken from the diagram in the ‘55 manual. I presume the wire passes through one bolt head and then through a second for security? Loctite will also make its way into the job!

Cheers,

Steve
