Jampot rebuild

Post by murraymck »

I'm currently rebuilding a set of Jampots from my 1951 G3LS. They are the model with the screw on lower spring retainers. I have followed the excellent articles which are available here. They are in pretty good shape inside apart from the usual leaks and one having oil in it and the other almost dry.
I found an excellent description as to how the damping system works when I was looking at the front fork information and they look like a longer version of the similar thing.
After I read that I did wonder about the clearance of the bronze seat which sits below the damper valve. On both of my shock absorbers there is significant clearance between the OD of the bronze seat and the ID of the damper tube. I realise the bronze seat functions only a guide and not a seal because of the machined scallops around the OD, but with the clearance they have they are not the best guide. Is this how they are normally are or do I need to machine up some new ones?

Thank you in advance
