Mod 16 full width rear hub seal position

Post by Martin_Surrey »

I have a 59 mod 16 HW alt/coil with full width ally hubs.

Rear is non QD and from diagrams appears to be deluxe, although not sure why deluxe ?

Just stripped rear hub to fit new SS rims and spokes (Valtru) which went well.

Removed taper bearings to clean and regrease.

I do have a query on seal/top hat washer positioning.

On the brake side the plain washer and then seal are to inside and then top hat washer.

Diagrams show speedo (right) side with seal other was round ie top hat washer first, then seal and plain washer facing out.

Does anyone know the reason and can confirm diagram correct.

Have fitted tyre now so will remove seals to make balancing easier, but interested to hear others experience.

Thanks

Go to the Tech.Articles. Look for Cycle Parts, then Heavyweight rear hub assembly. There's also a sectioned hub showing all the correct assembly. Very important to get this right to avoid rear wheel lock-ups.

For the photo of the sectioned rear hub, go to Photos, then Post War Twins Parts, it's on page 5 at the top.
