Correct order for centre stand?

Post by G3L1946 »

Good morning all,

Have I got this in the right order to reinstall? I think the spring might be wrong? Also , the two insert plugs, are they correctly placed ( inserted from the inside ). I took photos when dismantling but , when referring to them, not too clear.

Thanks,

Steve

I think that the spacers should be inserted from the outside but I am usually wrong. My main reason for writing something is you have had no reply and now this will come back up when people log in. Someone must have installed a stand more recently than me.

No, they fit from the inside as Steve's photo. The big spacer (inside the spring) fits in between them, so easy to tell if you've got it right.

Hi Clive & Dave,
Thanks for replying to my query. I think I have worked it out ( see attached photo ). The two spacers take up the space between the central spacer and bolt. I couldn’t rely on my dismantling photos as it wasn’t clear. Also, I’ve discovered other things that I’ve disassembled were incorrectly put together previously!
Thanks again,
Much appreciated,

Steve

I've just taken one off and it was the same as your last photo.

A couple of points .. the inserts are a push fit in the stand, and they and the centre tube are clamped together between the cradle tubes .. the stand rotates around them ..

You may find, as I did, that the stand may rub against the nearside end of one of the studs holding the crankcase halves together. If this occurs, slacken the nearside nut and tighten the offside and gradually work the stud across and clear of the stand ..

It can be good practice to completely assemble and tighten everything in a dummy run without the spring, to check the operation ..

(With acknowledgement to the guys who advised me .. )

I made up a simple tool to help align the various parts before trying to push the stud through. Basically, a steel bar, the same diameter as the stud, with a hardened taper at one end and a hole in the other to accept the stud. That lines everything up and allows the stud to be inserted without damaging the thread, or the tapered shoulder on the end.
